Modern Elizabethan hair

Modern Elizabethan hair

Little White: volume, viewed 30.10.15, (digital image), littlewhitedenzian.com,

I have chosen to look at this design because it links in with the Elizabethan look; the hair is shaped to give the impression of a love heart, which was used many times with Elizabeth, it is also very contemporary because the hair is messy and overall very straight.

In this portrait of Elizabeth we can see the overall shape of her hair is a love heart, she used this style in many of her portraits and had wigs made to keep this look. Her hair is in small tight curls, unlike the image above where the hair in straight and smooth. these images are similar in shape but the artist who recreated the Elizabethan look made a contemporary version by adding a modern technique of straightening the hair.

This is an image taken form the internet of plaits, it is a modern take on the Elizabethan style of hair. Below is an example of a historical hair do including buns and plaits. I have chosen these images to compare them because each shows a different way in which plaits can be used. Both designs have the technique of plaiting the hair around the head, the modern image has incorporated a ribbon throughout the design which was taken from the Tudor era.

In this portrait we can see the hair of an Elizabethan lady with buns and plaits, I have compared this to modern image of buns and plaits because they are very similar in style.

These images below of Elizabeth I show the style of hair that inspired me to use this image above, although Elizabeth's hair is very structured and stiff, the colour and texture of the curls ties in with this image of the model. To me the design above looks like the inspiration for the idea came from Elizabeth; the hair is a bright red/orange, it is big like an Afro and the makeup of the model is very pale, with no eye brows.

I have chosen to look at these images of Elizabeth as they show different examples of hair in an updo with pearls incorporated. This design is used today mostly in wedding hair styles and in Royal affairs, e.g our Queen Elizabeth would wear pearls around her neck or in her hair as a fashion statement and to show her royalty.

Here is an image of Queen Elizabeth wearing pearl earrings, pearls embellished around her necklace and in her crown, this is a perfect example of how pearls are used today in royalty to show wealth and power. she also wears the pearls in a fashionable way embellished in her jewelry as a subtle but pretty way.

For this design I parted the hair into two; the front, around the face and the back of the hair, for the back I used curling tongs to achieve small ringlet curls, the front I did a french plait, this was to shape the face and separate the curls. I was happy with the finished design but next time I will ensure my plait is neat with no stray hairs and I will leave the clips in the curls for longer to ensure they don't drop.

This design shows a technique I have learned in a practical lesson, I have completed a french plait on the front section of Nichols hair, this shows it can be used in a contemporary hair style.

I tucked the end of the plait underneath the curled hair and clipped it into place, I then pulled the hair over to the left side and let it hang.

For this hair style, I started off with tying the hair into a small pony tail at the top of the head and folding it in on itself, I then repeated this many times all the way down the hair, I then pulled the hair out of each pony tail slightly to create a loose style and to hide the hair ties, I then used clips to secure the design and to hold it in position so the hair ties were covered completely. I then tied the end of the pony tail into a fish tail plait, this went to the right side and hung nicely. I was pleased with the outcome of the design especially because it was the first time I attempted it, next time I will neaten up the design to ensure there are no stray hairs.

For this design I adapted the plait technique for a more delicate look to use for a wedding hair style, I enjoyed doing this design and found it easy to do. This shows the different techniques in lesson can be adapted and used for a contemporary look.

This image shows a portrait of a lady painted in the early 16th century, her hair is very big and puffs out at the sides similar in fashion to crimped hair. Crimping the hair gives it large volume and when brushed, increases it even more, this image shows hair similar to this and is part of my inspirational journey to creating my final look.

This portrait of an unknown lady shows extraordinary hair, most of the design is up in a un at the back of the head and the rest is down at the front, although short it wasn't the fashion to have hair down during this time. It shows very small waves of hair that remind me of hair that has been crimped. The image below shows an exaggerated contemporary version, both images inspired me in my design for my models hair.

Runway to Real Way: Crimped Hair | Beauty RSVP, www.beautyrsvp.com, at Rick Owens, viewed 30.10.15, (digital image)

For this look I have used:
  • Crimping iron
  • grips for holding weight of the hair
  • pin tail comb
  • brush

This image was part of my inspiration for the look I design on Eloise, I wanted to make the hair big and bold, this was achieved by crimping the hair and backcombing it to give it more volume, this look is particularly hard with a model with thin and short hair, her hair was recently washed and died so made it difficult to achieve a big and puffy look. Next time I create a look using crimping and backcombing I will use extra hair pieces and props to ensure the hair has lots of volume. This was very quick and would be achievable in a shot time frame.
I wanted the top of the hair to stay straight and smooth, then to puff out into a large afro type hair style. To achieve this next time I will place small grips at the beginning of the crimped hair to ensure a straight line.

BIG run way hair

Hair fit for the runway

Wild Mushroom Hairdos: Lorenzo Riva's Spring/Summer Runway Show ..., www.trendhunter.com, wild mushrooms hairdos, viewed 23.10.15, (digital image) Lorenzo Riva's Spring/Summer runway show 2010

This crazy hairdo was on a 2010 catwalk, I have chosen to look at this because it represents big fashion hair in a new way; it represents big and bold whilst being very different, the hair is more like a waterfall around the face instead of a big afro type taken from Elizabethan era. This style would require a lot of hair extensions,  but is definitely  inspirational and I want to practice a similar look on a real model.

This shows an image of runway hair that looks like it has been inspired by Queen Elizabeth I, I have been practicing this style of big hair in lessons and have yet to achieve a smooth look. Although Elizabeth had very frizzy hair, this could be a good representation of a contemporary look to and old style.

I have chosen to look at this portrait of an unknown lady to compare to modern day hair styes now used in run way shows and for fashion. This look would have been used in a magazine or television advert due to its odd shape and size, but in historical times this hair was considered everyday wear and was chosen by many women of the 16 th century. The want for big hair came from the inspirational Queen Elizabeth I, as her hair was always big, made form padding or a wig, some of the same techniques used today.

I have used bibs image in my research because the design, colour and makeup of the model reminds me of the style used in the Elizabethan era, the artist of this design has aggregated the look by intensifying the colour and size of the hair, I admire this idea and plan to incorporate something big into my final design.

This is an image of Cheryl Cole, her hair is very big and follows the theme of Elizabethan up do. The size of this hair design and the way it is mainly away from her face in curls shows the link between modern and historical looks.

I like this image, it does well to portray the Elizabethan style of hair but also has a very contemporary feel. Instead of having many little curls created by crimping the hair, it has been created using curling tongs; this gives a much more free and bouncy look and texture. This look has inspired me to use different techniques of curling the hair instead of using crimping.

Bun on head top - General Discussion - Digital Spy Forums, forums.digitalspy.co.uk, http://static.becomegorgeous.com/img...6/big_hair.jpg, viewed 23.10.15, (digital image)

I have chosen these images to portray the Elizabethan look because they all tie in with the colour and size used back then. In this particular image the hair is pilled on top of the head and a prop would have been used for strength and size. I like the extreme look to all the designs used in the runway. Many modern design have links to hair and makeup used in the Elizabethan era regarding size and colour.

This is a portrait of Isabella D'Este Circa, I have chosen to compare this image of her with others on this page showing contemporary looks because this shows big styled hair was used often in the Elizabethan era, hair was a very important part of looking good, respectable and wealthy. In this particular portrait she is wearing a prop to make her hair much bigger, this is used in modern hair do's to create the same effect.

Different plaits

Different plaits

These images are a selection of plaits and braids that I have chosen from great hair elegant styles for every occasion, By Davis Biton, viewed 23.10.15.

This image is taken from the book 'great hair,' (reference above) and shows a modern example of decorated hair, This hair do is up in a bun with a chain braided through, below are some examples of Elizabethan hair that has been decorated with pearls and jewellery for fashion and beauty purposes.

https://www.pinterest.com/sarah_15/elizabethan-hair-makeup-ideas/ viewed 20.11.15 (digital image)

This image shows the connection to the buns and plaits images I have found in one of my hair books. I have chosen to look at this image form the Elizabethan era because the hair of the lady is very neat, and shows a historical take on buns and plaits, which are included in some of the techniques I have been learning. These contemporary images show a modern take on the Elizabethan buns and plaits.

These images of buns illustrate the different and sometimes complex way to create a bun and hold the hair. In the Elizabethan era the hair would have been neatly tied into a tight bun at the back of the head to hide the hair and hold it up away fro the face and shoulders. These images show a contemporary take on buns created from plaits.

https://www.pinterest.com/sarah_15/elizabethan-hair-makeup-ideas/, viewed 20.11.15, (digital Image)

I have chosen to look at this portrait of Elizabeth as it shows her wearing pearls in her hair for decoration, she would wear all kinds of jewels and pearls to show off her wealth and purity. These decoration techniques are still used today, proved in the selection of images I have hose to look at from a modern hair book. Although the jewels and decoration symbol as changed over time, the fashion and beauty statement has not. This shows how fashion conscious Elizabeth was, which has carried on through time and is a councils thing still thought about immensely today.

These images from the Elizabethan era show the different styles of hair and what was used in the hair for decoration. The hair was very neatly pulled back into tight buns at the back of the head, I have learned these bun techniques in lesson and have practiced the technique on my 'Kate' Doll.

This is another example of a modern look taken from the ideals of the Elizabethan era, the design is made form curling the hair into ringlets and holding them into place with small grips. I have chosen to look at this image because it resembles the hair of Queen Elizabeth herself, although Elizabeth had very small and tight curls this is a new look brought in from historical times.

This shows a portrait of Elizabeth I, her hair is in tight little curls, a look hard to create if the hair isn't naturally this way. The image above shows a contemporary ay to recreated this look, using small sections of hair and tying them into curls.

Decorating the hair

Decorating the hair

Wearing an English hood, also called a gable or pediment head dress.

Modern day accessories for hair mainly include pearls (taken from Elizabethan era) for weddings, and celebrations, and clips. This image shows a wedding design with added flowers that imitate pearls. I want to take this inspiration and interpret a new way of decorating the hair in my final design. I particularly like this look because the bun and plait resemble the look I have been practicing for one of the ideas for my Elizabethan look, it has given me ideas for adding pearls or other decorations in my look.

This image shows Elizabeth I covered in many decorations, her hair is decorated in pearls, symbolising her purity and chastity. The many decorations have inspired me to create designs that include this in my final plan. I want to include an object that has symbolism, this will tie in with the Elizabethan theme.

How to Wear Hair Ribbons, viewed 23.10.15, (digital image), www.totalbeauty.com

This is another modern look, a ribbon is woven into the hair through a plait, this technique amongst others have been used in Elizabethan hair styles to decorate the hair and hold it in place. I like this look and I want to practice different ribbons and design to incorporate into my plaits.

This is another example of a contemporary design that demonstrates a decoration in the hair, golden beads run throughout a design at the back of the head. Decorations similar to this have been used throughout historical eras to style and make the hair look 'good.'

Winter bridal hair

Winter bridal hair

I have been designing ideas and plans for a winter bride, this is to combine historical and contemporary designs to show that many ideas can be used in the real world on clients. I have been practicing what I have learned in lesson and the research I have been doing independently to come up with a new design that includes buns and plaits.
Some Glamorous Hairstyles For Winter Wedding | Mine Forever - Part 1, www.mineforeverapp.com, glamorous hair for winter wedding, viewed 22.10.15, (digital image)

I chose this image because it reminded me of Elsa from the film frozen; she is wearing a large plait with blonde hair, ideal for winter as the star from frozen has the power to freeze. This look is very elegant and sophisticated; ideal for a wedding as is promotes a beautiful style while pilled on the head for a warmer look. This look relates to my project because I have been practicing plaits for an Elizabethan style.

Bridal hair and make-up themed photos on ibride.com, bride.com, viewed 22.10.15, (digital image)

This image stood out to me because it promotes a winter look, the hair combined with the makeup and crown gives a cold and snowy theme to this wedding hair style. This is a very beautiful image and displays good use of photoshop; the skin is smoothed and the beads give a nice effect over this makeup ideal. The beads in the hair give a nice touch, and also add to the effect I want to receive whilst creating Elizabethan style hair ideas. The artist has used blue and silver colouring on the hair to influence even more the look of winter. I would like to use some gold colour in the hair for my final design to help influence wealth and royalty. This crown also relates to Queen Elizabeth, and foes well to fit in with the winter theme, this also reminds me of a ice queen.

This is an inspiring Facebook page to promote different hair styles that involve plaits, new designs are posted daily and incorporate different techniques to get bridal and everyday looks. Some of my favourite designs involves fish tails, tying the hair into knots, using a pony tail and plait to create a beautiful bridal design and using props to build on the hair and creat very pretty  and sophisticated looks.

I have chosen to look at this image of Elizabethan portraiture, because it shows tightly done up hair that in modern times would be made using plaits and buns. Although in this portrait the back of the hair isn't visible, it would have been neatly done in a bun or plait bun, but the main attention of the hair was focused at the front as this would be on show. I have been practicing different design on my doll and on models to get the same effect using plaits and buns.

This is another example of historical hair that looks like plaits, I have chosen to look at this image because I have been studying the different styles of plaits and buns amongst other techniques used in historical times, and finding ways to bring them into modern times.
