This hair chart was inspired by the personality of both Lettice knollys and the housewives of orange country, I wanted to create something big and bold to represent the large and colourful personalities of these people. I have included a jewel on her forehead hanging from her hair to link with the Elizabethan era, I have also kept to the love heart shape. I like this idea and will practice this on my Kate doll to find the best way to achieve  the big curls. 

This is one of my hair chart design I have practiced on my Kate doll, I found this design wasn't challenging enough. I chose to include an elephant into the design for decoration because of the symbolism. In western cultures an elephant symbolises; reliability, power, dignity, royalty and pride. On researching this I found this information very fitting to the project as many of the royalties in the Elizabethan era, especially Elizabeth, wore many jewels and objects, including of animals to symbolise their royalty, wealth and power.   

This hair chart was inspired by the avant garde look, I wanted this to be wispy and free, bouncy and but softer than my 3rd hair chart. I will achieve this look by using a prop underneath the middle of the two top sections, I will then curl and crimp parts of the hair to create a large textured layer to cover the props. To make this a more contemporary design I have created a smooth and soft design that covers part of the face, I will also make a fish tail plait at the back of the hair. I have invested in a small crown to go into my design at an angle, this will symbolise royalty and the Elizabethan theme. 

This is the practice for my final design, I have chosen this because it is the biggest out of the four and shows the most techniques I have been learning; padding, plaiting, backcombing and curling. This is by far my favourite design and suits the model I have chose as her hair is very long, also thin, which works well with piling it o top of her head as it won't be too heavy or uncomfortable.

This is the design given to me from Matida for her final look, she has said she will add more plaits to the design and improve on the overall structure. I have practiced this, and will practice it on her next time in lesson.

I have chosen this image to reflect on my learning of Elizabethan styled hair, in this image the model is wearing crimped hair with a middle plait, I have been learning different ways to style crimped hair and the different ways to make the hair have more volume; crimping is the best way to get big hair. This image inspired me because it shows another way in which to style hair that has been crimped around a plait.

I have chosen these series of images to look at because they link in with the type of hair and makeup inspiration I have been looking at. The blocking out of the eye brows was what first attracted me to it, but the hair also shows the link to Elizabethan looks. This image is inspired by 'The Queen,' and has strong elements taken from portrait in that era.

I have chosen this image because the model has a pale face, red lips and the image as a whole looks very pale and white, this links with the Elizabethan style of makeup. The hair of the model is decorated with jewels and pearls; this also has a strong link to the style of decoration Elizabeth I would have had. She uses many jewels and pearls to show her wealth and power, her image was always recognized and she had to keep this up for publicity and portrait paintings. This image has taken her design ideals and recreated them into a more contemporary look, with the pearl embellishment on her wrist as well as her hair piece, shows the relation to the fashion and style from Elizabeth.

I have chosen this image because the style of hair is very slick and is pulled back away from the face, this reminds me of the style of hair in the Elizabethan era. The model is also wearing a ruff which shows it was inspired my Elizabeth and the fashion form that era. I want to incorporate different fashion styles into my final images to improve the look of the photos and relate the hair to the Elizabethan era as well as the contemporary designs from my research.

This image has strong links to the Elizabethan era, the red hair and crimped curls show influence from the era and the high curve of hair at the front. I liked this image because of the colour changes in the hair and the style used once crimped. I will experiment with different ways to recreate the crimped hair look without using crimping tongs, this will give me new ways to recreate a design inspired by both Elizabethan and contemporary designs.

This is one of my favorite images, it has inspired me to create volume in my hair design with something other then crimping. I admire the colour and style of this hair do, I want to incorporate the soft curls into my design. I admire the strong use of colour in this image and it has inspired me to add some colour into my final design, as my models has brown hair I will find it hard to create a bright look with using semi-permanent colour, so for this I will research into different way to get the best use of colour without damaging the colour or the hair of the model. I could use a glitter gold spray or another kind of hair spray to apply colour or glitter.

For this hair style I have used the techniques of curling, crimping and rick racking; I have pulled the hair away form the face to keep with the Elizabethan theme and have added small curls to the bak of the hair to keep the look contemporary and innocent. I want to use cropping and backcombing to create the large section of hair at the front, and the rick racking technique at the front of the hair over the crimped hair to add definition and keep the look neat.

My second design also has an original Elizabethan theme; the techniques I will be using for this style is curling; the back of the hair will be fully curled, crimping; to create a big and bold round shape at the front, and rick racking; I will rick rack the very front section of the hair and pin each section back carefully ensuring they don't loosen. 

This idea is much simpler than my first hair chart design, thinking of my time management I need to make sure I have planned each part of the making of my idea to fit in the time frame. Although there is less detail in this design, curling and rick racking each section of hair will take longer than other sections of my first design, this is something I will have to practice and stay on top of. 

 

This is my design practice for my second hair chart, I practiced this on my Kate doll, it was an interesting design to make but took me longer than expected due to the rich race technique. I liked the finished look for this design but I want to use more techniques to find what I am best at. I will keep expanding on this idea to come up with a better quality contemporary design.

This is my first hair chart, it is a mixture of Elizabethan inspired looks and contemporary inspired looks. I want to create big statement hair at the front and a neat plaited design at the back with a plait bun. 

I have pulled the hair away form the face to keep with the Elizabethan theme, the bold hair at the front will be secured using props and crimped hair, the front section of the hair will be backcombed and pulled upward to create a large and erratic look. My inspiration for the big hair at the front of the face came from the avant garde looks I have researched on a fashion run way. I have also kept small curled hair around the face to shape it and keep the look contemporary. 

Both of my hair charts were inspired by Elizabethan beauty ideals; original elizabethan hair is large at the front and pulled back from the face, I have kept this style in my idea. To make the large love heart shape at the top of the head, I will use large props made from tights, this will ensure a stable and sufficient hight for the design. I may have to add extra hair to the design depending on the hair type of my model. I have also added curls at the front each side of the face as well as enlarged the love heart shape at the front to make it a 'styled mess', this is my contemporary addition at the front of the hair. 

At the back of the head the hair is traditional in the sense of having a plaited bun; the hair is pulled back neatly and gripped into place. I have also added a fish tail plait at the bottom of the hair style to add a contemporary feel. 

   

This is a practice for my first hair chart design, I have used the techniques of backcombing, crimping and tying the hair into a bun. I think this design is a good interpretation of a contemporary Elizabethan design, but I also think it is too similar to the original look. Although I have used the backcombing to make the front of the hair very big and stand up, I want to build on this idea and include more techniques.

I have chosen to look at this design because it links in with the Elizabethan look; the hair is shaped to give the impression of a love heart, which was used many times with Elizabeth, it is also very contemporary because the hair is messy and overall very straight.

In this portrait of Elizabeth we can see the overall shape of her hair is a love heart, she used this style in many of her portraits and had wigs made to keep this look. Her hair is in small tight curls, unlike the image above where the hair in straight and smooth. these images are similar in shape but the artist who recreated the Elizabethan look made a contemporary version by adding a modern technique of straightening the hair.

This is an image taken form the internet of plaits, it is a modern take on the Elizabethan style of hair. Below is an example of a historical hair do including buns and plaits. I have chosen these images to compare them because each shows a different way in which plaits can be used. Both designs have the technique of plaiting the hair around the head, the modern image has incorporated a ribbon throughout the design which was taken from the Tudor era.

In this portrait we can see the hair of an Elizabethan lady with buns and plaits, I have compared this to modern image of buns and plaits because they are very similar in style.

These images below of Elizabeth I show the style of hair that inspired me to use this image above, although Elizabeth's hair is very structured and stiff, the colour and texture of the curls ties in with this image of the model. To me the design above looks like the inspiration for the idea came from Elizabeth; the hair is a bright red/orange, it is big like an Afro and the makeup of the model is very pale, with no eye brows.

I have chosen to look at these images of Elizabeth as they show different examples of hair in an updo with pearls incorporated. This design is used today mostly in wedding hair styles and in Royal affairs, e.g our Queen Elizabeth would wear pearls around her neck or in her hair as a fashion statement and to show her royalty.

Here is an image of Queen Elizabeth wearing pearl earrings, pearls embellished around her necklace and in her crown, this is a perfect example of how pearls are used today in royalty to show wealth and power. she also wears the pearls in a fashionable way embellished in her jewelry as a subtle but pretty way.

For this design I parted the hair into two; the front, around the face and the back of the hair, for the back I used curling tongs to achieve small ringlet curls, the front I did a french plait, this was to shape the face and separate the curls. I was happy with the finished design but next time I will ensure my plait is neat with no stray hairs and I will leave the clips in the curls for longer to ensure they don't drop. 

This design shows a technique I have learned in a practical lesson, I have completed a french plait on the front section of Nichols hair, this shows it can be used in a contemporary hair style. 

I tucked the end of the plait underneath the curled hair and clipped it into place, I then pulled the hair over to the left side and let it hang.
